What’s black and white and read all over?
“Hungry man, pick up a book, it is a weapon…” Bertolt Brecht (1898 – 1956)
In an effort to widen the range of things sold by our charity, Unity has a second-hand bookshop in Govan. The shop is about a three minute walk from Govan underground.
Located in an old sun-bed salon, the bookshop sells second-hand books, CDs, LPs and DVDs.
In January 2010, a small team of volunteers cleared out all the junk from the shop which included an old piano and a wheelchair, salvaged wood to build shelving and counters and then decorated both the inside and outside of the shop. Several partition walls had to be removed as well to make more room in the back of the shop which is being used for the thousands of books we have in storage.
The shop has a community notice-board and we’re happy to take literature and publicity material from groups who broadly conform to our charitable aims of promoting environmentalism, diversity, community development and anti-racism.
Chris D, one of the volunteers working in the shop said “Opening a book shop in Govan was a very positive thing to do and we hope that it’ll become an important link with the local community. We’ve already had a great response from the people coming into the shop since when it opened and the shop’s been pretty successful so far.”
Once a month on the second Saturday of the month, the bookshop holds a second-hand book-sale in the Hillhead Bookclub just off Byres Road. Come along and join us – we have hundreds of books for sale.
The new bookshop is located at 118 Langlands Road, Govan, G51 3BU.
